When it comes to digital citizenship, we have a responsibility to give credit where it is due. Having access to so much information and content can make it easy to forget that Copyright Laws, Fair Use Laws, and avoiding plagiarism are still of the utmost importance. First let's go over what all of these terms mean.
Plagiarismis the act of stealing or passing someone else's work or ideas as your own without giving credit to the source. (Plagiarism.org)
Copyright is a form of legal protection that authors of published and unpublished work have against the unauthorized use of their ideas or materials. (U.S. Copyright Office, 2011)
Fair Use is a legal allowance to copy copyrighted material as long as it is done in specific and limited ways. Examples of Fair Use would be creating a parody of an original work, or if content is used for a nonprofit educational purpose. (U.S. Copyright Office, 2011)
